MA Elks Government Relations
ONE OF THE PRIMARY MISSIONS OF OUR ORDER IS TO PERFORM WORKS THAT BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY, STATE AND NATION.
On an annual basis ALL of these statistics should be compiled at the Lodge and State level and reported to the Grand Lodge Government Relations Committee, which compiles the information and publishes an annual report reflecting the positive charitable impact of Elks nationwide.
It may not seem too significant to you, but it is demonstrated by the 2019 Survey of Volunteer, Youth, Charitable and Community Service Programs report at Grand Lodge convention that reflected contributions of $460,704,156.70.
Broken down that means the Elks donate $1,262,203
One million, two hundred sixty-two thousand, two hundred and three dollars a day is a lot of money to donated daily by 1 single organization of citizens. The first pillar of the BPOE is Charity and the proof of our Orders dedication to that principle is in the numbers.
Massachusetts Elks Association donated $4,653,897 in 2018 alone. That is $12,750.40 a day
We have been focusing on dollars spent. We also have to take in account hours spent. The amount of volunteer hours reported is astonishing. However, we are missing vital reports from Local & State Committees reflecting the hours spent. (Somehow this part always gets looked over!)
We hope that the revamp of the MA Elks Government Relations Committee educates, entices and engages Members to keep track of not only the amount of money spent but also the hours spent in planning, meeting and executing Elk events and charitable endeavors.
WHY IS CHARITY REPORTING IMPORTANT?
How can we assist you to make it easy and painless? This year the mission of the Massachusetts Elks Association Inc., Government Relations Committee is to educate and assist our member Lodges in this local Lodge level reporting. It will also assist the Grand Lodges efforts to promote positive tax legislation relating to our tax status.
The Massachusetts Elks Association, Inc., Government Relations Committee Materials have been prepared to assist and guide you in the in the proper and timely reporting of our charitable works, which is the first of the primary missions of the Grand Lodge Government Relations Committee.
CHARITABLE REPORTING – The Committee is charged with ensuring that the amazing amount of charitable work is fully, completely and accurately maintained throughout the year and reported as part of the Grand Lodge Annual Report. The Committee also advocates for positive legislation which can produce positive impacts on the financial health of Lodges.
ADVOCATE FOR OR AGAINST LEGISLATION WHERE NECESSARY – Where it is necessary, the committee will advocate for proposed legislation that would help our Lodges and, on the contrary, take action to oppose any legislation or governmental action that would adversely affect them. In addition, our committee will take steps to change existing laws when necessary for the benefit of the Order.
